If you're searching for the best A/B testing plugin for WordPress in 2026, the landscape looks very different than it did a few years ago. Google Optimize - the one major free option - was switched off on 30 September 2023, and the tools that remain take genuinely different approaches: some are WordPress plugins, some are hosted platforms you connect with a snippet, and they differ on where your data lives, how you're billed, and which builders they work with. This comparison walks through the real options and, since one of them is ours, we'll be explicit about where the others win.
Updated July 2026
Key takeaways
- The real choice is where the work happens: inside WordPress, or on a vendor's servers that your visitors' data is sent to.
- Metered billing punishes growth. Flat or free pricing does not.
- Cookieless operation, flicker-free rendering and full-page-cache compatibility are where most tools quietly break.
- Nelio has the most complete WordPress-native feature set, Thrive Optimize wins inside the Thrive ecosystem, and VWO or Optimizely suit funded experimentation programs. AB Test WP is the free, self-hosted option, and it is ours.
How we compared them
Every tool below was judged on the same five questions:
- Where does the work happen? Inside WordPress, or on someone else's servers your visitors' data gets sent to?
- How is it billed? Flat price, metered by traffic, or custom enterprise quote - metered billing punishes growth.
- What can it test? Individual elements, whole pages via URL split, or both - and with which builders.
- Does it hold up technically? Cookieless operation, flicker-free rendering, and compatibility with full-page caching are where most tools quietly break.
- Can you trust the results? Proper statistics - significance, sample-size planning, sample-ratio checks - not just two bars and a hunch.

Nelio A/B Testing - most complete WordPress-native feature set
Best for: site owners who want heatmaps and multivariate testing inside WordPress and don't mind cloud processing. Nelio is a mature, genuinely good plugin: tests are created in wp-admin, and it goes beyond plain A/B with built-in heatmaps, scrollmaps, and multivariate testing - features AB Test WP doesn't match today. The trade-offs are structural rather than quality issues: results are processed in Nelio's cloud, so visitor data leaves your server, and billing is metered by tested pageviews, so a traffic spike or a busy season raises your bill. If those two things don't bother you and you want the widest feature set in a WordPress plugin right now, Nelio is a strong pick - our detailed Nelio comparison goes feature by feature.
Thrive Optimize - best inside the Thrive ecosystem
Best for: sites that build every landing page with Thrive Architect. Thrive Optimize is well integrated and easy to use, but it only tests pages built with Thrive Architect, and it focuses on whole-page tests rather than element-level changes. If you're already paying for Thrive Suite and living in that ecosystem, it's a sensible choice; if you use Elementor, Bricks, Gutenberg, Divi, or anything else, it simply doesn't apply - you'd be rebuilding pages just to test them. Details in our Thrive Optimize comparison.
Split Hero - one hosted dashboard for many client sites
Best for: agencies that want every client's page tests in a single external dashboard. Split Hero is a hosted service that split-tests WordPress pages, billed monthly by active campaigns. Its model is genuinely convenient for agencies: one login, client guest access, no time spent in each site's wp-admin. The flip side is the usual SaaS trade - data lives in their cloud, tests are page-level (URL) rather than element-level, and the meter runs monthly whether or not a campaign concludes. Our Split Hero comparison covers the agency angle in depth.
VWO and Optimizely - real experimentation programs, real budgets
Best for: staffed optimization teams. These aren't WordPress plugins but enterprise platforms connected via a snippet or SDKs, and for the right team they're excellent: multivariate and server-side testing, feature flags, heatmaps, session recordings, and support contracts. VWO bills by monthly tracked users; Optimizely sells on custom quotes. If you're running a budgeted experimentation program across products, they're built for exactly that - and a WordPress plugin isn't trying to compete there. For a single WordPress site, though, they're usually paying for a platform when you need a tool. We compare honestly in the VWO and Optimizely pages.
AB Test WP - free, cookieless, and self-hosted (yes, it's ours)
Best for: WordPress sites that want real A/B testing without traffic meters, cookies, or data leaving their server. Full disclosure: this is our plugin, so weigh this section accordingly - but the design goals are easy to verify. Everything runs on your own server with no external dashboard; assignment is cookieless and happens in the browser, so it stays flicker-free and works behind full-page caching and CDNs; and variants are matched point-and-click or by a CSS class, so it works with any builder or theme - Gutenberg, Elementor, Bricks, Divi, Oxygen, and the rest. The free version is a complete testing tool: element and URL split tests, page-visit, element-click, link-click, form-submission and WooCommerce add-to-cart goals, a sample-size planner, and no pageview limits. Pro adds up to six variants, unlimited tests, WooCommerce revenue tracking, and the statistics that make results trustworthy: significance, Bayesian probability-to-beat, and automatic sample-ratio-mismatch detection.
Where it's not the right choice: we don't offer heatmaps, session recordings, or multivariate testing - if you need those in one tool today, Nelio or an enterprise platform fits better. And if your team ships experiments in application code with feature flags, that's Optimizely's territory, not ours.
How to actually choose
- You want free, private, works-with-anything: AB Test WP. It's the only current option that's free forever with no traffic meter.
- You want heatmaps + multivariate inside WordPress and accept cloud processing: Nelio A/B Testing.
- You build everything in Thrive Architect: Thrive Optimize.
- You're an agency that wants one external dashboard over all client sites: Split Hero.
- You run a staffed experimentation program with budget: VWO or Optimizely.
Whichever you pick, the tool matters less than the method: form a hypothesis, size the test before you start with a sample-size calculator, and run to plan - the workflow in our step-by-step WordPress testing guide applies to every tool on this page.
The one-sentence version
There's no single "best" - there's the best fit. Metered cloud platforms trade data ownership and predictable cost for extra features; AB Test WP trades a shorter feature list for free, flat-priced, self-hosted testing that works with any builder.
Want to try the self-hosted route? The free AB Test WP plugin runs cookieless with no traffic limits on any WordPress builder. Get notified at launch - and if it's not the right fit, the comparisons above tell you which tool is.
